Greater Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was first organised in the City of Melbourne, Florida in the 19th Century. The first meetingswere held in the dining room of Wright and Mary Brother's home on Crane Creek, facing the northwest of Lipscomb Street. The organizers were Wright and Mary Brothers, Robert and Carrie Lipscomb, Balam Allen and his wife. The house is still standing, and was formally the home of Dr. Nelly Holman.
The first church building was erectedin 1885 on the north end of Lipscomb Street. Rev. A. G. Smith was the 1st pastor and Rev. A. Harris was the first Presiding Elder. Under the pastorate of the late Rev. J. B. Garmon, we saw the need to effect a new church building and parsonage. Sufficient land was purchased and in 1964 or present church building was erected at 2416 South Lipscomb Street was completed in 1964, under the pastorate of the late of the Rev. B. H. Martin.
The cost of the present church and parsonage was approximately $110,000.00. Currently, Greater Allen Chapel's property and buildings are valued at more than 478,000.00. Our parsonage was completely paid for 1969. The final payment on our church building was made in June 1976. Greater Allen Chapel was incorporated with the State of Florida during the 1981-82 Conference Year. The church completed the construction of a $300,000.00 multipurpose building [Charles W. Jackson Education Building] without a mortgage - paying as it was built
